Spotlight Series: Metta Yoga Calgary: Where Inclusivity Meets Community
“Yoga is the perfect opportunity to be curious about who you are.”
Have you ever felt intimidated by the idea of stepping into a yoga studio? Maybe you've worried about not being flexible enough or keeping up with the pace of the class. If so, you're not alone. Many people hesitate to try yoga due to these concerns. However, there's a place in Calgary where everyone is welcome, regardless of their experience or physical ability: Metta Yoga.
Metta Yoga is the brainchild of Brandi Wilson, a passionate yogi who, after 20 years of practice and over 10 years of teaching, was driven to create a space where everyone could experience the joy and benefits of yoga. Brandi's journey began in a rather unconventional way – with a strong dislike of gyms! "I was searching for an outlet to get healthy (and happy)," she explains. "I stumbled across a yoga DVD, began practicing in my living room, and fell in love."
But Brandi's passion for yoga transcended her living room. Her natural desire to connect with others drew her to studio classes, where she discovered Moksha Yoga Edmonton and met Angela, now her business partner and best friend. "There was no looking back – I was hooked and found my true calling," Brandi shares.
This calling led her to leave her corporate job and dedicate herself fully to teaching and building community. She embarked on a rigorous journey of training and self-discovery, completing over 1000 hours of certified yoga training, including certifications in Vinyasa and Yin yoga. "From the beginning, Angela mentored me, patiently guiding me to find my voice and confidence in teaching," Brandi recalls.
Together, Brandi and Angela opened Moksha Yoga Calgary North in 2013, which later evolved into Metta Yoga Calgary in 2018. "We wanted to create a studio where everyone felt welcome, a place where people could come as they are and feel accepted," Brandi explains. "Inclusivity and accessibility are at the core of everything we do."
This commitment is evident in the diverse range of classes offered at Metta Yoga:
Metta: This signature class is the heart of the studio. A hot yoga class designed for all levels, Metta focuses on breath, strength, and flexibility. "It's a challenge, but accessible to everyone," Brandi assures. "You'll feel the heat and work hard, but leave feeling empowered, not defeated."
Vinyasa: For those seeking to deepen their practice, Vinyasa offers a dynamic and creative flow. Each class is unique, with layered sequencing that challenges both the body and mind.
Yin: A perfect complement to the more active styles, Yin invites deep relaxation and restoration. Long, supported holds target deep connective tissues, improving flexibility and releasing tension.
Flow: This hot flow class, often taught by Brandi herself, is a fun and challenging experience where postures are linked fluidly with breath.
Yang/Yin: Experience the best of both worlds with this balanced class. The first half focuses on building strength and flexibility, while the second half invites deep relaxation through Yin postures.
Wall Yin: This unique class utilizes the wall as a prop to support deep hip and spine stretches. "It's incredibly accessible while still being very effective," Brandi notes.
Meditation: Offered before Tuesday evening Yin classes, these 30-minute guided meditations provide a valuable tool for cultivating a calm and focused mind.
Metta Yoga is more than just a place to practice asanas; it's a vibrant community where connections are forged and friendships blossom. "Our students are always hanging out and connecting with each other and our team before and after classes," Brandi observes. "We've created a space where people feel comfortable lingering, chatting, and building relationships."
The studio's design plays a key role in fostering this sense of community. The spacious reception area, complete with complimentary tea, invites relaxation and conversation. The large changerooms provide ample space for students to connect without feeling rushed.
Metta Yoga's commitment to community extends beyond the studio walls. Their Friday night Karma classes, offered by donation, provide an opportunity for people to practice yoga at a reduced rate while supporting local charities. "We believe in giving back to the community that has supported us," Brandi emphasizes. "The Karma classes are a way to make yoga more accessible while also contributing to important causes."
The teachers at Metta Yoga are more than just instructors; they are guides, mentors, and community builders. Brandi has cultivated a team of passionate individuals who embody the studio's values of inclusivity, authenticity, and compassion.

A Deeper Dive into Metta's "Why"
Brandi's decision to leave the corporate world wasn't just about finding a healthier lifestyle; it was about finding deeper meaning and connection. "I felt a disconnect in the corporate environment," she confides. "I wanted to create a space where people could come together, support each other, and experience the transformative power of yoga."
What sets Metta apart is its unwavering commitment to inclusivity. "We truly believe that yoga is for every body," Brandi emphasizes. "We offer a variety of classes, modifications, and props to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and empowered in their practice."
Adding a "Taste" of the Classes
Imagine stepping into a Metta class. The warm air envelops you as you move through a series of flowing postures, synchronizing your breath with your movement. The instructor's calming voice guides you, offering modifications and encouragement. You feel your muscles lengthen, your heart rate rise, and your mind quiet. As you leave the class, you feel invigorated, refreshed, and ready to take on the world.
Or perhaps you prefer the stillness of a Yin class. The lights are dimmed, soft music plays, and you settle into long, supported poses. As you hold each pose, you feel tension melt away and a sense of deep relaxation wash over you. This is a practice of surrender, of letting go, and of finding stillness within.
Strengthening the Community Focus
Metta Yoga is more than just a schedule of classes; it's a hub of connection and support. The studio hosts regular workshops and events, inviting students to deepen their practice and connect with like-minded individuals. Their social media pages are filled with inspiring quotes, student stories, and announcements of upcoming events.
Addressing Potential Concerns
Brandi understands that cost can be a barrier to accessing yoga. "We strive to make our classes as accessible as possible," she says. "Our Karma classes and Intro Month offer are great ways to experience Metta Yoga at a reduced cost."
For those who might be hesitant about trying hot yoga, Brandi offers reassurance. "It's not about pushing yourself to the limit," she explains. "It's about listening to your body, staying hydrated, and taking breaks when needed."
The Final Dish
Metta Yoga isn't just another yoga studio. It's a testament to the power of community, inclusivity, and the transformative power of yoga. Brandi's journey from a hesitant beginner practicing in her living room to a passionate studio owner is an inspiration. Her dedication to creating a welcoming space for all, regardless of experience or ability, is truly commendable.
